The Entourage Pocket Edge is the world first Dualbook. Half 7″ Android touchscreen tablet and Half 6″ E-ink Ereader. This company Entourage fell out, but the product was so cool I couldn’t resist purchasing one.

These prototype dualbooks are flooding online stores at a discount because since release the company crashed, the website is down, and tech assistance is no longer available. But amazingly Tech blogs about the Entourage Pocket Edge have sprung up all over the internet assisting in bypassing the company’s registration lock (necessary to gain access to the device) and android developers are getting their hands on this device (building custom firmware to really utilizes the edge’s better than decent hardware specs. ) The Entourage Pocket Edge released with a custom Android “Dingo” 1.6 interface, this interface was slow, limited and ugly. With the help of Google I was able to get my Pocket Edge, the smaller 7′ dualbook, to Android “Ermine” 2.2!

The Entourage Pocket Edge is WiFi-enabled and is said to be the most portable dualbook in the market weighing only 24 ounces. It features 360 degree hinged LCD and E-Ink touchscreens. The device works with the software allowing both the screens to be used simultaneously to fully cater to the needs of the user. Sporting a 7” LCD touchscreen, the Entourage Pocket Edge runs the Custom dualbook version of Android 1.6 “dingo” firmware, with a bunch of useful dual screen apps. The PE (Pocket Edge) also has an amazing 6” E-Ink touchscreen designed by Wacom and Adobe for premium viewing of e-books,newspaper articles and documents in EPUB and PDF form. Entourage Pocket Edge is compatible with the included stylus helping users to mark up documents, make notes, highlight copy, Google etc in a full featured word processing suite. (Word, PDF, Excel). The e-book store of Entourage has been shut down but the device can be easily hacked to offer the full amazon app market or current Android Market. Entourage Pocket Edge Cons:

• Before upgrading to Android Ermine 2.2 the stock firmware seems slow.
• No actual tech support from Entourage.
• No andriod market (i use 4shared.apk instead)
• The android tablet screen could be a bit crisper for video playback and more sensitive to the touch.
• The e reader screen is not the fastest I’ve seen.
• As beautifully and accurately this screen displays my pictures and magazines it cannot yet run high end 3d android games, not so much because of the hardware but the video kernel software. Some great improvements in this Kernel are offered in the 2.2 Ermine update.
• Front facing camera is only 2 megapixel

Entourage Pocket Edge Bottom Line:

This is an incredibly cool and fun piece of hardware for those willing to put in a few minutes hacking their device. For less than $150 how can you go wrong? Even though the e-ink screen isn’t the fastest Ive seen it is very crisp, touch screen with the stylus, and one of the most full featured with entourage’s custom annotation tools.
